India News

Dalit FreedomIn many ways, India's Dalits are the supreme victims of human civilization. For over 3,000 years, they have endured spiritual, physical, social, economic, cultural and political dehumanization. There are few days in India when the newspapers do not report atrocities against Dalits. However, Dalit oppression and dehumanization is only a symptom of a larger problem. The greater disease is what Dalit scholars call "Brahminism" which gave rise to the caste system so many years ago.

Dalit Freedom Now and Forever, is a book that powerfully narrates recent developments in India and the complex challenges facing the Indian Church and other faith communities as a result. It tells why Indian Christians have been targeted by the casteist Hindutva forces. It shows how Jesus is critically important to the Dalit Freedom movement.

OM Australia was recently privileged to have Dr Joseph D'Souza as the guest speaker at the annual celebration dinners. We would like to encourage you to continue to support this ministry. To buy a copy of this book, please click here to go to our OM Australia web store.

February 28, 2009 will stand out as a moment of triumph as the Dalit Education Centres celebrated their first-ever graduation service.

With blue satin caps and gowns, 17 boys and girls stood with beaming faces as a large crowd of people applauded their accomplishment in completing a full course in basic education in the English language. Two other schools sent their graduates via video, giving testimonies of thanks and a hopeful future. In all, nearly 50 children emerged as successful graduates.

Many of these children did not stand a chance of a new future until the Dalit Education Centres (DECs) began 10 years ago. They were condemned to a life of severe poverty and ruthless oppression like the generations before them because they were labelled as outcasts.
