Starting a Youth MinistryHow do you start a youth ministry if you hardly know any youth? A few people in the Balkans team thought that prayer might be a good thing to start with and set aside an hour each week to specifically pray for this handful of young people they already knew, and to gather ideas of how to deepen these relationships, and to make new contacts. One idea was to bake Christmas cookies together. Surprisingly, all of the 3 girls who were asked were excited, so an afternoon was scheduled. When the team tried to confirm with them, however, only one girl actually responded. Eventually the team even had 4 girls working with them in the kitchen – one of the girls the team had never met before, and who simply came along with her friend! After about two hours of weighing, mixing and kneading, they not only managed to taste some delicious cookies – but all could also see progress in the team's goal to have a youth ministry in Bar.

Christmas Party for Roma street kids and their mothersMay (Hong Kong) has just spent her first Christmas and New Year in Albania. One highlight for her has been sharing God’s love with the local Roma community through three special events hosted by the ‘Emmanuel Centre’ ministry led by local believer Mona, and OM workers like May.

On 17th December, nineteen street kids packed into the meeting-room next to their shanty dwellings. “All dressed-up, and punctual! That shows how they valued their Christmas party,” says May. “ We sang, prayed, related the Christmas story, and shared the Gospel using a five-coloured star. There were snacks and presents for them too. Their mothers have really tough lives,” May continues, “so on 22nd December we staged a party for them also. Twenty-five women came, plus fifteen kids, so our little room got really hot! Again we could share the Good News, songs, prayers and gifts. How these Roma ladies need God’s love, comfort and guidance.” Six days later, May and Mona were out amongst broken-down shacks, delivering New Year food packages to fifteen families.

The street children can be very challenging to work with, but Mona, May and her OM colleagues, are inspired by the love of Jesus. As May says, “all these kids are just like you and me, needing the true love of Father God!”
