The UN and Red Cross suggest that as many as 100,000 have died and hundreds of thousands are displaced in the wake of the disaster, which swept away entire townships and villages. Thousands of orphans are at high risk of sickness and abuse. Gas and food prices, as well as the cost of other basic commodities, have more than tripled due to the shortage of supplies. In response, aid continues to trickle into this Buddhist nation in spite efforts being hampered. The military junta government has swallowed large quantities of foreign aid. The few aid workers allowed into Burma are restricted. In areas such as Rangoon, the former capital, power supplies were restored and streets were cleared within days of the tragedy. However, people in the flooded Irrawaddy Delta may soon be without clean water supply. Outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and illnesses such as diarrhea are feared due to contaminated water and poor sanitation.
