Children in the DEC schools in India are discovering that they can hope and dream for the future. Recently they were asked what they would like to be when they grow up – some replied doctors, engineers and more. The 13,500 students in our schools and those who will join in years to come will dream big -- and their parents and communities will see a brighter flame of hope.
We continue to up-skill staff so they can provide educational excellence. Recently Australia’s Pacific Hills School System conducted training for 95 staff including child psychology, phonics, teaching methods, developing reading habits and more.
George Verwer and Philip Yancey visited schools and spent time with students. Philip also visited the tailoring and computer institutes at Uddamarry and the Lydia Enterprise of Women With a Cause. |

The Directors, Staff and Volunteers of Mercy Teams International were so encouraged by the kindness, generosity and practical support given towards the Christmas Shoebox appeal. From toy cars and trinkets, to underwear and stationery sets, 1000 Christmas Shoeboxes were stuffed full of goodies and have gone out to children-at-risk in Cambodia, displaced children on the Thai-Burma Border and slum dwellers in Myanmar. The children come from families that live below the poverty line. They are often in rags with bare feet and suffering either abuse or neglect.
1000 carefully selected children will benefit from the gifts that have been lovingly donated, sorted, gift wrapped and shipped.
Boxes are set to be distributed over the Christmas season together with tracts where possible and handed out by staff and church members in each of the South-East Asian countries as a practical gesture of Christ’s love for these children. |

As I manage to find a few moments to ponder the usual busyness of the Christmas season, I reflect on 2008. It has been an stretching year, a huge year, and yet I am so grateful when I think of how God has touched the lives of so many. Bringing the ship to Australia was one of the largest undertakings of OM Australia in recent years. To see people’s lives transformed whether through receiving Christ in their lives or taking up the baton for global mission however that looks in their world – going, giving, supporting, praying or mobilising… made the extra effort put in by everyone associated with the visit worthwhile. And as I ponder Christmas, I am reminded that this is what it is all about, seeing people growing in their understanding and love of Christ. Sam, one of my colleagues reminded me as I was reflecting on the past year - Is 9:7 sums it up: “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this."
May I take a moment in your busy world to thank you for the part you have played in OM Australia in 2008 and to wish you and your family a special and blessed Christmas and New Year.
