Jesus por los niños del Ecuador
Thursday, 19 November 2009

‘Jesus por los niños del Ecuador’ is an orphanage in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It offers a place to stay for 30 children. In many ways it is a poor choice for a home, but for children without an alternative it is the best option. Only two of the children are truly orphaned, the rest come from an array of backgrounds and a string of broken homes. The children’s problems are daunting: physical, psychological and sexual abuse; parents with financial problems, alcohol addiction and substance abuse, and parents that are in jail.

OM began its work with the orphanage in January 2009. The goal was simple, to help the ministry wherever needed. The owner was a former street child and often lacked organisation. The children violently fought with one another, screamed, and often ran away. They were disrespectful, disobedient and angry. One day at the orphanage was enough to exhaust, discourage and emotionally and spiritually empty a person. The team endured but wondered why they were pressing on.

As the ministry continued, interest grew. Soon several volunteers joined OM’s team. Two psychologists started visiting the orphanage, talking with the children and using their skills to help the children. OM saw the need to replace the leaking roof. God provided the money for the team to complete the task and the orphanage was blessed with a roof... (cont.)

Phillipines Relief Update 4: One Month after….
Wednesday, 04 November 2009

Things are returning to normal life after a calamity that was different from one community to another. In most flooded places the flood water has receded, but not in our adopted community. In some places families have been able to return to their houses but not in our community. Some families still live beside the roadside as it is the only higher place as their homes are still under water. Where the church is and inside the church, the flood water is still waist deep and the smell is awful. This situation is causing respiratory illness and skin allergies in the community.

On October 28, we had another round of food relief and have increased the number of recipient families as some were not able to receive from our previous distribution. Initially we thought the 600 food packs was more than enough yet were told we needed more. Quickly the night before, we purchased additional goods and packed them. The distribution went smoother as it was done systematically. More church members helped us to distribute and everyone enjoyed it and had so much fun. An OM staff and a church member partnered to distribute the packs to avoid duplication. Church members realised that even if they themselves were flood victims, they could still be channels of blessing to the most affected. And for us, we found there are more opportunities to minister especially in the interior along the lake, especially among the children. All in all, 660 food packs were given out the neediest.

Aid continues in the Phillipines
Friday, 16 October 2009

On Tuesday, our team continued the food relief distribution courtesy of one Chinese church who prepared 500 packs for our adopted community. A few leaders of the church came and did the initial distribution in the morning and our OM team continued in the afternoon. Instead of asking people to come and get their packs, we intentionally went block by block nearer to the homes of those families displaced. Most of us had to wade through knee-deep stagnant flood water. This is to also avoid crowding of people and also goods will really get to those who have not received any yet. “Thank you for coming to us,” said an old man who stayed in the second floor of their house. He is partly paralysed which aggravated his context. For him, as well as a number of other families, it was their first time to receive food relief brought to them. Every time they would hear relief distribution, by the time they arrived, there was crowd of people already and often when their time comes, there is no more left for them.
